Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch Achieves Climate Registered™ Status
Dec 14, 2009
Reporting emissions to The Climate Registry fits with firm’s long-term efforts to make operations more sustainable
Engineering design and consulting firm Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch (M+NLB) has achieved Climate Registered™ status by successfully registering its comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory with The Climate Registry (The Registry), a nonprofit organization created by North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations. The Registry sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report GHG emissions.
Climate Registered is the first step in a successful GHG emissions management and reduction strategy. By establishing a clear and consistent inventory of these emissions through The Registry, M+NLB gains insight into its operations and processes, and is better prepared for the potential impact of any new associated regulations, including those currently being considered in the U.S. Senate and approaches currently being deliberated at the U.N. Climate Change Conference, which began December 7.
“Organizations that are Climate Registered are the true environmental leaders setting examples for others within their industries and communities. They work ahead of the curve and have voluntarily taken responsibility for reporting their emissions according to the most rigorous standards available,” said Diane Wittenberg, Executive Director of The Registry.
M+NLB’s firm-wide sustainability initiative includes working with local jurisdictions in which their offices are located to achieve “green office” certifications. Where these kinds of programs do not exist, they are working to help establish pilot projects for green office certifications. As a result, the firm was named the first Portland, Oregon Climate Champion in June. M+NLB’s corporate headquarters is also working towards certification as a San Francisco “Green Business” by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, SF Environment, and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
The firm has also signed on to the 2030 Challenge, an industry-wide commitment to design, renovate and construct buildings that reduce GHG emissions and eventually make all buildings carbon-neutral by 2030. As part of this effort, M+NLB will conduct its own annual GHG emissions inventories with a goal of reduction each year.
“We began greening our business years ago, because one of our core values is to do what’s right,” said Walt Vernon, M+NLB CEO. “We can’t be telling our clients they should reduce their environmental footprint unless we are doing it ourselves.”
