A couple of years ago, a major national healthcare organization asked me to help them develop a National Water Strategy. They had facilities in California and were running into development problems with certain properties in water-challenged areas. I proposed a range of ideas, which helped lead to the development of their national water policy, as well as implementation of other strategies.
As most Californians know, we have been suffering from an historic drought for the past several years. Sierra snowpack is at its lowest level in recorded history.
Today, Governor Brown issued an Executive Order, calling for measures to reduce potable water usage by 25%. The order includes provisions for increased costs and other penalties for overuse of water. Read more here.
For years, Mazzetti has prioritized to achieve the highest level of sustainability awards for all ten offices. And, as a large proportion of water is used to generate electricity, our many years dedicated to reducing our energy consumption and to be carbon neutral helps with the water situation, too. Research is our other means of contribution. Specifically, we’ve been working at the nexus of research re better water systems (including various gray water solutions, eliminating hot water systems, etc.) and policy re water safety (including our work on the Legionella issue in various forums).
So, with the Governor’s action, we will renew our efforts to become more water and energy efficient, to play our part. We are also ready to assist any of our clients do the same.
