Healthcare Mechanical Engineer George Augustini Joins Mazzetti

2/09/22

Meet Mazzetti’s newest Healthcare Mechanical Engineer, George Augustini. George is no stranger to the “Spirit of Mazzetti,” driving healthier, enduring environments through research, code reform, and innovative project design. He was recently named among ENR’s Mountain States Top Young Professionals (under 40). Formerly at SSR, George joins Mazzetti Denver as an Associate Principal, located in Denver, CO, serving Healthcare clients nationwide.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO YOUR SPECIFIC LINE OF WORK?

I decided to go into engineering in high school. Before my father passed, he was studying to be a mechanical engineer which inspired me. I have always been “mechanically minded.” I worked for my uncle in his auto shop and decided that I did not want to do manual labor for a living. I studied Machine Design at college and pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. My first job out of college leaned toward structural engineering, which then led me to a position as a mechanical consulting engineer. I explored various types of projects until finding a passion in healthcare.

WHAT ABOUT THIS ROLE EXCITES YOU?

I am looking forward to being more directly involved with clients and design. For the last few years, I have been more involved in management. I am excited to spend more time designing and more direct interaction with project stakeholders.

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT YOUR LINE OF WORK?

I appreciate the opportunity to impact better patient care through design. My wife is an RN which gives me unique insight into healthcare and specifically the healing environments. I also really enjoy the complexity of the building systems typically akin to healthcare facilities. (I can thank my mentor for introducing me to this sector, which has, now, been the focus and passion of my career.)

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO MAZZETTI?

I was drawn to Mazzetti’s mission to improve the healing environment while being environmentally conscious. I have known Walt, Mazzetti’s CEO, for a few years through our work with ASHRAE and ASHE (on code committees). Through this work, I have experienced the “Spirit of Mazzetti,” continuously driving for better design for better outcomes (which, does not happen by doing the same thing that has always been done!). Once I became acquainted with Mazzetti Principal Ryan Stromquist and discussed the future of design in Denver, I knew I wanted to be part of the team.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE FUTURE OF MAZZETTI?

I am excited about the opportunity to improve healing environments through sustainable design. As I mentioned, through my involvement in industry organizations, I have witnessed Mazzetti’s commitment to making a difference and, as needed, challenging the status quo. The desire for the firm to continue to make positive changes and share that information is inspiring, and I look forward to helping with that movement!

WHAT IS YOUR UNIQUE (OR GREATEST) VALUE YOU BRING TO CLIENTS? TO THE INDUSTRY? (I.E. WHY SHOULD CLIENTS WANT YOU ON THEIR PROJECTS?)

I bring a passion for finding solutions to complex challenges and knowledge sharing. I enjoy “outside the box” thinking while managing project budgets. I have a passion to serve, and I cannot think of a better avenue than in Healthcare with Mazzetti.
