Challenge / Context
Klickitat Valley Health (KVH) in Goldendale, Washington, faced outdated and unreliable diesel generators from 1967, requiring urgent electrical upgrades. The hospital lacked the $2 million needed for the project.Â
Solution / Approach
After two failed funding attempts, KVH secured a $3 million state appropriation by incorporating a hydrogen fuel cell, aligning with Washington’s interest in alternative energy. KVH partnered with Toyota and Kohler to install a 100-kW hydrogen fuel cell, originally designed for Toyota’s Mirai vehicles. The fuel cell was connected to non-emergency outlets in patient rooms and the hospital’s main conference room.  TÂ
Outcome / Impact
The system received approval from the state in March 2025, marking a significant milestone in the project’s advancement towards full operation. This project highlights both the potential and challenges of hydrogen power in healthcare. While the system is expensive and regulatory pathways remain complex, KVH’s experience provides valuable insights into alternative energy solutions for hospitals.Â
