During this Engineer’s Week, Mazzetti is thrilled to celebrate an occasion that’s close to our hearts and fundamental to our mission: “Welcome to the Future”. This week isn’t just about recognizing the incredible achievements in engineering today—it’s about looking forward, towards a future that’s brighter, more innovative, more sustainable, and more diverse than ever before. In the spirit of paving new paths and inspiring the next generation of engineers, each day of Engineer’s Week, we will be showcasing our own remarkable engineers. Each spotlight is a testament to the passion, dedication, and innovation that drive the people at Mazzetti.

Let’s meet two of our exceptional mechanical engineers, Dustin Smith, PE and Jagathish Xavier. As we celebrate Engineer’s Week at Mazzetti, we honor these remarkable mechanical/plumbing engineers whose work not only shapes the present but also propels us toward a future that’s brimming with possibilities.

Dustin Smith, PE

What led you to engineering?

My path to becoming a mechanical engineer felt like a natural progression, deeply rooted in my early experiences. Growing up, I was deeply involved in my family’s HVAC business, which planted the seeds of my interest in engineering. This hands-on exposure not only familiarized me with the technical aspects but also instilled a passion for solving complex problems and improving systems.

What are you doing to shape the future of engineering?

My commitment to advancing the field of engineering is embodied in my role as the president of the Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP) Atlanta chapter. This platform has allowed me to spearhead discussions on significant topics, such as the expansion challenges in Metro Atlanta’s North Counties, presented at the Square Footage 4th Annual Atlanta Hospital, Outpatient Facilities, & Medical Office Buildings Summit.
Beyond organizational leadership, I strive to foster innovation within my team by encouraging them to draw on diverse experiences across various projects and disciplines. We actively seek unique applications for existing technologies, pushing the boundaries of conventional engineering solutions. This approach not only fuels our creativity but aims to set new standards in engineering practice.

What initiatives do you practice at home to help bend the climate curve?

On a personal level, I am deeply committed to contributing to environmental sustainability. One of the key initiatives I’ve embraced is biking to town whenever possible, reducing carbon emissions associated with vehicular travel. Additionally, I have taken up beekeeping, a hobby that not only enriches my connection to nature but also supports the local ecosystem by aiding in plant pollination.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Biking to town is not just a mode of transportation for me; it’s a way to immerse myself in the environment while improving physical health. Similarly, beekeeping offers a unique escape, connecting me with nature and the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem.


Jagathish Xavier

What led you to engineering?

My journey toward engineering was both fascinating and inevitable. Ever since my early school days, I was captivated by the tangible magic of science and mathematics. I found myself naturally drawn to understanding how various devices around us – from the simplest mechanical tools to complex electrical systems – work. The discussions that filled my childhood, often among my siblings and friends, were centered around these inventions and their underlying principles. This deep-seated curiosity aligned with my academic strengths, leading me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and further specialize in Engineering Design at the master’s level. It was this combination of personal passion and academic pursuit that guided me into the engineering pathway.

What are you doing to shape the future of engineering?

My commitment to engineering is rooted in a desire for continuous improvement and innovation. My approach to any project is holistic – I immerse myself fully to understand its nuances, aiming to garner insights that could elevate its design, safety, and environmental sustainability. Currently, my passion projects revolve around reimagining wastewater treatment. I’m an advocate for decentralized wastewater treatment systems, which I believe can revolutionize environmental sustainability. Beyond technical solutions, I’m dedicated to involving communities directly, fostering a culture of sustainability and collective responsibility towards our planet.

What initiatives do you practice at home to help bend the climate curve?

I believe that meaningful change starts with individual actions. At home, my family and I actively engage in several climate-positive practices:
• We diligently sort our waste into categories for recycling, composting, and proper disposal, aiming for minimal waste footprint.
• We strive for near-zero food wastage in our household.
• We opt for reusable bags over plastic ones for all our shopping needs.
• When purchasing new appliances, energy efficiency is a key consideration for us.
• Our home employs smart technology for heating and cooling to minimize energy use.
• I personally lean towards walking, cycling, or taking public transport whenever possible, to cut down on car usage.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I cherish family time and play time outside work. I have two lovely kids, Jessie Cressida, and Jason Chris. They make me busy with parenting. We like to watch movies, play, cook, shop, and travel together. I love playing badminton on weekends and prioritizing enough rest.
