Challenge

John Muir Health needed to expand and modernize its Walnut Creek campus. The system required more beds, more single patient rooms, and larger treatment spaces. The existing acute care facilities also needed updates to support a broader range of services. Work needed to happen while a parallel tower project moved forward at the Concord campus.

Solution

Mazzetti delivered master planning and full MEP engineering for the new 242 bed medical tower and central plant. The team also completed lighting design, fire protection engineering, medical equipment planning, and IT and low voltage planning. The effort expanded the Trauma Center and ED, added operating room capacity, created new Cath Labs, and increased parking.
The IT and low voltage team reviewed and upgraded standards for both the Walnut Creek and Concord towers. The work covered nurse call, security, network infrastructure, and cabling. The coordinated standards supported efficient planning across multiple campuses.

Outcome

The project added single patient rooms across ICU, medical surgical, acute inpatient rehabilitation, ante and post partum care, and a new Neonatal ICU with 33 private rooms. The expanded ED and trauma functions increased treatment capacity. The upgraded infrastructure improved operations across the campus, and the system engaged Mazzetti for later construction projects based on the success of these towers.
