Challenge

The John Muir Health Walnut Creek Behring Pavilion project involved the development of a 155,000 square foot OSHPD-3 outpatient facility with a focus on cancer treatment. The facility needed to integrate a wide range of medical services, including clinics, diagnostic and treatment services, and support spaces, all while maintaining a calm and inviting environment for patients. The challenge was to create a state-of-the-art facility that combined the expertise of top cancer specialists from John Muir Health and UCSF Health, providing access to the latest treatment advances close to home in Contra Costa County.

Solution

The project team, including MEP Engineering, Medical Equipment Planning, and Lighting Design, worked collaboratively to achieve the project’s goals.

Outcome

The project successfully created a LEED Gold Certified facility that offers comprehensive cancer treatment and care coordination in a single location.

Key Features

Lighting Design

  • Wireless lighting controls: These controls were implemented across the entire facility, providing significant upfront cost savings and long-term energy efficiency benefits.
  • Support for IoT technologies: The wireless control system supports IoT technologies such as Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS), Asset Tracking, Wayfinding, and Demand Side Management.
  • Trial run of the Atrius system: The controls manufacturer provided a trial run of the Atrius system on the upper level, allowing John Muir Health to evaluate its potential for future applications.
The innovative wireless lighting control system not only provided cost savings and energy efficiency but also enhanced the facility’s ability to support advanced IoT technologies. The integration of these technologies improved the overall functionality and user experience of the Behring Pavilion, demonstrating the effectiveness of the collaborative approach taken by the project team.
