Walt has devoted his career to creating healthier, enduring environments.  He is a visionary and a catalyst for meaningful change in the world.

He has spent more than three decades helping healthcare organizations rethink how facilities are planned, designed, financed, and operated to better serve people, communities, and the planet. Walt’s career bridges engineering, law, finance, and policy, giving him a rare ability to connect strategy with implementation. He began his career as an electrical engineer and went on to build Mazzetti from a small engineering practice into a national and international firm with a deep focus on healthcare, science & technology, and other complex, mission‑critical environments. Under his leadership, Mazzetti became an employee‑owned Benefit Corporation, formally aligning the firm’s business success with its public commitment to bending the climate curve™.

A recognized thought leader in healthcare sustainability and resilience, Walt has played a central role in shaping industry standards and guidance. His work has influenced building codes and regulations that enable renewable energy microgrids, electrified systems, and long duration energy storage for healthcare facilities. He has contributed to and led the development of landmark publications and design guides addressing decarbonization, energy resilience, ventilation, and infection control, working closely with organizations such as ASHRAE, the National Academy of Medicine, and the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering.

Walt partners directly with healthcare leaders to address complex challenges at the intersection of climate, operations, and patient care. His project experience spans carbon neutrality strategies, systemwide energy and emissions planning, microgrid implementation, and large‑scale energy infrastructure transformation for health systems across the United States and internationally. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, he helped coordinate global engineering and facilities support efforts, collaborating with public health and engineering experts to rapidly adapt healthcare environments and improve ventilation guidance worldwide.

Beyond his work at Mazzetti, Walt founded and leads Sextant, a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering clean energy and resilient infrastructure solutions for healthcare and educational facilities in low‑resourced communities around the world. This work reflects his belief that access to reliable, sustainable infrastructure is fundamental to health, equity, and long‑term resilience. Walt’s work advances Mazzetti’s public benefit/mission by demonstrating how technical excellence, policy engagement, and business leadership can work together to reduce carbon emissions, improve resilience, and create healthier environments. Through mentorship, collaboration, and a systems‑based approach to problem‑solving, he continues to challenge the healthcare industry to think bigger, act boldly, and design with both humanity and the future in mind.
