Challenge

Kaiser Permanente set a goal to move toward a low-carbon, resilient energy future across its healthcare portfolio. The organization needed a clear path to reduce demand, add renewable generation, improve storage, support emergency power needs, and prepare for long term electrification. Hospitals require continuous power and have complex load profiles, so the strategy needed to maintain reliability while lowering carbon emissions.

Solution

Mazzetti completed a system wide energy assessment to map current loads and identify reduction opportunities. The team modeled conservation measures before advancing renewable and storage options. Solar, fuel cells, long-duration batteries and microgrid controls were evaluated for both day-to-day performance and emergency coverage. The team developed a step-by-step roadmap that aligned engineering, operations, sustainability and financial goals. This work defined pilots and future deployment phases for Kaiser facilities.

Outcome

Kaiser gained a clear strategy to reduce energy use and shift to cleaner power sources while protecting critical operations. The work supported a first set of renewable microgrid projects, including a long-duration battery system paired with fuel cells and solar. The strategy positioned Kaiser to move toward its climate goals with a scalable approach that ties capital planning to measurable carbon and resilience benefits.
