Challenge

The U.S. Government Research Laboratory faced the challenge of creating a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to researching renewable energy technologies. The goal was to deliver a LEED Platinum Certified work environment that would support scientists in their mission to analyze and better understand alternative energy technologies. The project required innovative solutions to manage energy usage and ensure sustainability throughout the facility.

Solution

Mazzetti provided total building commissioning for the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), a 185,000 square foot facility designed to offer laboratory and research capabilities for a broad range of renewable energy generation. The approach included implementing giant 15-foot skylights to reduce light usage, integrating systems such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for high electrical distribution simulations, and utilizing a high-performance computing data center (HPCDC) for energy efficiency and renewable energy research. The facility also featured unique integrated systems for megawatt-scale testing of clean energy technologies.

Outcome

The project successfully delivered a LEED Platinum Certified facility that sets an example for sustainable energy management. The ESIF now provides office space for approximately 200 researchers and support staff, including 15 laboratories, outdoor test areas, an Insight Visualization Center, and a high bay control room. The laboratory’s innovative energy management systems and sustainable capabilities have positioned it as a leading facility in the field of renewable energy research, contributing to the advancement of clean energy technologies and supporting federal policy goals.
