Randall Children’s Family Birth Center

Maternity care environments have long prioritized clinical function over patient comfort, resulting in spaces that can feel sterile, impersonal, and disconnected from one of life’s most significant moments. At Randall Children’s Hospital, the goal was to reimagine the ninth floor as a modern Family Birth Center that would feel as welcoming as a hotel while still fully supporting the complex clinical demands of obstetric and neonatal care. The design team needed to seamlessly bridge the gap between a high-acuity medical environment and a warm, nurturing space for mothers, newborns, and families, without compromising the functionality required by obstetricians and pediatric specialists.

Mazzetti served as Lighting Designer and MEP engineer for the 48,000sf facility, approaching every design decision through the lens of patient experience and clinical performance. The team used warm finishes and carefully layered lighting strategies to transform the space into an environment that feels both restorative and purposeful. Taking advantage of the building’s ninth-floor position, the design maximized generous sightlines and ample natural daylight to further enhance a sense of comfort and calm. Central to Mazzetti’s lighting design contribution was the development of a custom exam luminaire — a bespoke fixture engineered specifically for the new Family Birth Center. This innovative luminaire integrates three distinct settings:

Beyond the lighting design, the project extended well past conventional Labor, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) and C-Section room configurations, enabling a full spectrum of obstetric and pediatric care within a cohesive, modernized environment.

The Randall Children’s Family Birth Center stands as a landmark example of human-centered healthcare design in Oregon.
