Challenge
Since 2019, Mazzetti has been collaborating with the staff at UCSF Benioff Children’s-Oakland, initially providing commissioning services for a new central utility plant (CUP). This included chillers, boilers, hot water generators, and cooling towers. In 2020, Mazzetti partnered with SmithGroup on a campus master plan to address the evolving healthcare needs of Northern Alameda County’s population. The project teams faced challenges in site planning buildings within a dense, urban campus. Community feedback and consensus-building were prioritized, with numerous forums held to present, discuss, and review the campus renewal program with the surrounding communities.
Solution
To tackle these challenges, Mazzetti analyzed existing drawings, provided feedback, and led the balance information process with sub-contractors for the MEP and IT/LV disciplines. Apart from these larger efforts, Mazzetti offered multi-disciplinary design services (MEP, IT/LV, Medical EQ, Lighting Design) for various renovations and equipment replacements on-campus over the last two years. These included projects such as Pharmacy Remodel Construction Review, NICU Lighting Replacement, Med-Psych Unit Renovations, Crisis Stabilization Unit Conversion, Ophthalmology Conversion Remodel, Domestic Hot Water Valve Balancing, X-Ray Replacements, Ultrasound Relocation, and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) Installation.
Outcome
The campus master planning and CUP efforts have successfully integrated new buildings into the existing campus site, while ensuring community involvement and support. The various renovation and equipment replacement projects have enhanced the hospital’s infrastructure and services. In late 2023, Mazzetti worked with the design team on the New Hospital Building (NHB) on campus, a 7-story, 295,000sf, $1.5B patient tower featuring Pediatric Trauma emergency services, NICU, an intervention platform, and a floor dedicated to behavioral health. Mazzetti provided MEP, lighting design, and IT/LV design for this project.
