Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics

The Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University faced the challenge of creating a state-of-the-art educational facility that would support the needs of the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Natural Resource Management, and Environmental Studies. The project needed to address the need for sustainable design, energy efficiency, and an optimal learning environment for students and faculty.

The design team, led by ZGF Architects, developed a six-story, 208,608sf classroom and laboratory building, making it the second largest building on the Cal Poly campus. The facility achieved LEED Gold certification through an integrated design approach that optimized daylight and carefully integrated it with electric lighting systems. A digital lighting control system was implemented to maximize daylight contributions while allowing instructors to control the lighting in individual classrooms. Occupancy and daylight sensors further reduced energy loads, and ambient light in teaching areas was delivered through direct-indirect pendants programmed for energy reductions based on task and available daylight. Task lighting at teaching surfaces complemented the daylight provided at perimeter walls, ensuring effective teaching instruction.

The Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics has become a model for sustainable design and energy efficiency in educational facilities. The building provides a high-quality learning environment for students and faculty, supporting the university’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The project has received LEED Gold certification, demonstrating its success in achieving energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
