Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) Centralized Baggage System Optimization
Challenge
As passenger volumes at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport continued to grow, the Port of Seattle launched a long-term baggage optimization program to improve the efficiency, reliability, and flexibility of the airport’s checked baggage system. The project replaces six independent baggage screening systems with a centralized screening operation capable of supporting projected growth to 60 million annual passengers while improving security screening, operational flexibility, and passenger service. Executing this work within one of the nation’s busiest airports required extensive planning and phased implementation to maintain continuous operations throughout construction.
Solution
Mazzetti is providing mechanical and electrical engineering services for the Centralized Baggage System Optimization project within SEA’s Main Terminal. Serving as the engineer of record for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and fire protection systems, the team is supporting the transformation of the airport’s checked baggage infrastructure into a centralized, airport-wide screening system. Designed to accommodate future passenger growth and evolving operational demands, the project enhances connectivity throughout the terminal and enables baggage checked at any ticket counter to be efficiently routed to any gate.
Temporary systems, detailed phasing strategies, and complex construction sequencing have been incorporated to maintain 24/7 airport operations while critical infrastructure is renovated and expanded.
Impact
When complete, the centralized system will optimize baggage handling performance, improve security screening operations, and provide greater flexibility for airlines and airport staff. The project represents a major component of SEA’s long-term modernization strategy, improving operational resilience while supporting continued passenger growth within the airport’s existing footprint.
