Dustin Smith,
PE, CPD
Dustin brings a grounded, hands-on approach to mechanical engineering shaped by years working in his family’s HVAC business. He blends that practical foundation with deep technical expertise in designing systems that perform reliably in demanding healthcare environments. Clients value his thoughtful planning, clear communication, and focus on how each design decision will impact real people using the space.
With experience spanning field investigations, load analysis, equipment selection, and complex HVAC system design, Dustin has contributed to projects across the Southeast, including the first LEED Gold hospital in the region. He has designed unconventional but highly efficient systems such as ground-source heat pumps, displacement ventilation, and low-temperature hot water heating, solutions that many engineers never encounter in their careers.
Dustin advances decarbonization and operational efficiency by prioritizing energy-smart HVAC strategies, guiding clients toward systems that reduce carbon intensity while maintaining patient comfort and clinical needs. He integrates field findings into design to avoid unintended operational issues and helps clients pursue LEED pathways, utility incentives, and low-cost efficiency measures with meaningful long-term payback. Outside of work, Dustin is an avid beekeeper and gardener in Georgia’s first Bee City, tending pollinators and growing produce using water-efficient methods.
As a leader in Mazzetti’s Atlanta practice, Dustin also contributes to industry growth through his involvement in ASPE, GASHE, and ASHRAE. His insight into real-world system behavior and his commitment to elevating both design and operations make him a trusted partner for healthcare organizations navigating growth, sustainability goals, and infrastructure modernization.
