Why Science-Based Codes for Healthcare Buildings are a Challenge

The idea that healthcare codes should be based on science is both popular and intuitively compelling. After all, much of medical practice is moving towards evidence-based medicine – favoring treatments for which evidence indicates provide superior outcomes (see, e.g., http://www.down-syndrome.org/editorials/2032/). And, if the building in which medicine is practiced might either facilitate or impede these treatments, it seems logical we should follow similar processes to determine what kinds of buildings we should build.
