UC Health Scope 1 Decarbonization

Challenge

As part of its broader climate action strategy, UC Health sought to accurately quantify and reduce Scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions across its health system. Achieving meaningful emissions reductions required validated baseline data, consistent methodologies across campuses, and a clear understanding of the operational and infrastructure challenges associated with decarbonizing complex healthcare facilities.

Solution

Mazzetti is supporting UC Health through a comprehensive, systemwide decarbonization effort focused on validating and updating each location’s 2019 Scope 1 emissions baseline. The team is reviewing natural gas consumption and other on-site combustion sources while conducting structured assessments of central utility plants and major emitting systems across individual medical centers. This work includes evaluating EnergyCAP datasets, analyzing equipment performance, and identifying campus-specific constraints and opportunities related to electrification and utility infrastructure.

Outcome

The project is creating a consistent framework for emissions baselining, opportunity assessment, and prioritization of carbon reduction measures across the UC Health system. By providing data-driven analysis and actionable recommendations, the effort supports UC Health’s goal of achieving a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 while helping individual campuses develop practical pathways toward a lower-carbon future.
