Marfa Ranch
Challenge
The custom residence outside of Marfa, TX was designed with sustainability as a primary focus. The challenge was to create a home that not only embraced the local environment but also provided a serene and isolated retreat. The residence needed to integrate seamlessly with the unique landscape of Marfa, known for its quiet yet eclectic charm.
Solution
Our lighting design studio completed its fourth rammed earth structure, utilizing the local onsite dirt to construct thick “adobe” style walls. This approach provided natural insulation and a quiet isolation. The residence features a rooftop terrace for star gazing, with exterior lighting designed to be concealed and warm-colored. Numerous integrated custom details throughout the residence reflect Mazzetti’s approach to brightness-based design, keeping light sources hidden while accentuating the beautiful surfaces of the rammed earth construction. Old oil pipes from local industry were repurposed into small cylinder downlights for exterior circulation areas, and custom-designed steplights with integrated LED sources were seamlessly integrated with the rammed earth construction. Skylights in the yoga and art studios allow natural light to fill the spaces while minimizing direct sun exposure.
Outcome
The architectural lighting system provides a layer of ambient light, allowing the decorative lighting selected by the owner to function as art pieces. The residence successfully combines sustainability with aesthetic appeal, creating a tranquil and beautiful living space that harmonizes with the local environment. The innovative use of materials and thoughtful design elements have resulted in a residence that is both functional and visually stunning.
