University of Oregon Hayward Field
Challenge
The University of Oregon sought to reimagine Hayward Field, one of the most iconic venues in track and field, as a world-class destination for collegiate, national, and international competition. The project required a complete reconstruction of the historic facility to support elite athlete training, enhance the fan experience, and provide the infrastructure needed to host premier events while meeting NCAA and World Athletics standards.
Solution
Mazzetti | BHE Group provided civil engineering services for the complete reconstruction of Hayward Field, delivered as a design-build project and completed in 2020. The new stadium was designed to support the University of Oregon’s championship-caliber track and field program while creating an exceptional venue for athletes and spectators from around the world.
The facility includes a state-of-the-art competition venue, public concourses and ramps surfaced with track material, and nearly 40,000 square feet of dedicated athlete training and recovery space beneath the stadium. These spaces support running events, long jump, triple jump, throws, and pole vault training, along with team locker rooms, study areas, lounges, offices, and support facilities.
Mazzetti’s civil engineering scope included the stadium, competition track and field facilities, the 15th Avenue Plaza, right-of-way improvements, and supporting site infrastructure. The team designed stormwater, wastewater, and water system upgrades to serve the new facility and developed drainage systems that meet NCAA and World Athletics performance requirements. Utility replacement and infrastructure improvements within the plaza further supported the transformation of the venue.
Outcome
The reconstructed Hayward Field sets a new benchmark for track and field venues, combining elite athletic performance facilities with an enhanced spectator experience. Improved sightlines, upgraded amenities, and close proximity to the competition create an intimate atmosphere for fans, while the advanced training and recovery spaces provide athletes with a world-class environment to prepare and compete. The venue continues Eugene’s legacy as a global center for track and field and serves as a premier destination for major national and international events.
