Matt Smith
As Chief Operating Officer, Matt strengthens how Mazzetti delivers complex, mission-driven projects by focusing on people, process, purpose, and performance. He leads the firm’s operational strategy and enterprise execution, working across practices and offices to ensure teams have the systems, clarity, and collaboration needed to deliver high-quality outcomes for clients.
He partners closely with practice leaders and technical teams to improve project delivery, strengthen forecasting and operational visibility, and align technology, quality, and workflow systems across the organization. His work centers on building practical operating frameworks—from project management standards to integrated data and technology platforms—that help teams deliver consistently while supporting the firm’s long-term resilience and growth.
Matt was a 2025 Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he explored how planning, design, and construction can better align with community goals and create lasting social impact.
Before joining Mazzetti, Matt served as Managing Director at MASS Design Group, an award-winning nonprofit design practice, where he led global operations and supported the organization’s mission-driven growth.
He has also served as a Visiting Scholar at Montana State University, his alma mater, where he taught and conducted research on hybrid organizations and alternative models of design practice.
Matt holds a master’s in Development Practice from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Philosophy from Montana State University.
With a background in operations, strategy, and mission-driven organizations, Matt brings a systems-level perspective to how firms evolve. He focuses on creating structures that enable collaboration across disciplines and geographies, helping Mazzetti serve healthcare and other carbon-intensive sectors while advancing its mission of Bending the Climate Curve.
