Wade. We want to allow time to discuss the impact that this ruling has on our employees and their families. While we recognize that Mazzetti is not a political organization or environment, the mission of the W@M committee is to promote gender equality within the company and A/E/C industry and support the women that work at Mazzetti to the best of our ability. We support the principle that women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. We recognize and respect that personal opinions may not agree with our position. As a committee dedicated to the mission of creating the most woman-friendly engineering firm in the world, we feel we must acknowledge the extent to which removing access to equitable healthcare services including abortion will negatively affect and limit women in achieving their full potential in their careers. Keeping diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind, we must also recognize that this decision especially impacts women of color and those who face economic hardship. It is also a significant setback for people that are not cisgender women who are still able to become pregnant including non-binary, intersex, and trans people. Bodily autonomy and access to equitable and life-saving healthcare are crucial to the survival and success of not only women, but the LGBTQ+ community as well, and we would be remiss not to acknowledge that fact. - [Meet Lydia Simpson – Lighting Design Intern](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/meet-lydia-simpson-lighting-design-intern/): Meet Lydia Simpson, lighting design intern in Mazzetti’s Atlanta Office. - [Women@Mazzetti Spotlight: TaKeisha Saunders](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/womenmazzetti-spotlight-takeisha-saunders/): In May, our Women@Mazzetti numbers held mostly steady aside from a departure that affected our number of women in technical leadership. We are excited for what’s to come, and look forward to continuing to highlight more amazing Mazzetti women in 2022! We are grateful to Monica Anderson for writing our last spotlight of the year on our wonderful controller, Edna Webb. Please enjoy. - [Women@Mazzetti Spotlight: Kristelle Fruge](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/womenmazzetti-spotlight-kristelle-fruge/): During October, Mazzetti had three new hires, including two females, pushing us to over forty percent women in the company, edging closer to our goal of being a fifty percent female-employed business. The Women@Mazzetti committee is focused on assisting with the implementation of new mentorship practices and members of the committee have hosted a series of meet and greets on different technical and professional development topics to allow employees interested in those areas of mentorship to get to know one another. The mentorship topics include M/E/P/T engineering, lighting, healthcare design, project management, marketing and business development, commissioning and sustainability, early career development, leadership, and BIM/VDC. Employees interested in being mentors in one or more of the topics were able to introduce themselves and talk for a few minutes about their experience. Our next steps are to pair interested mentees with mentors allowing them to determine if they are good match for one another and structure their mentorship relationship. We look forward to seeing how this new mentorship structure works to form a support network for both young and continuing professionals alike. - [Meet Janelle Drouet, Senior Lighting Designer](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/meet-janelle-drouet-senior-lighting-designer/): Meet Janelle Drouet, Mazzetti’s new Senior Lighting Designer. Janelle joins Mazzetti as a Senior Associate, based in San Francisco, CA, supporting all Mazzetti projects, with a focus on the West Coast. - [The Imperative for Healthcare to Combat our Climate Crisis](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/the-imperative-for-healthcare-to-combat-our-climate-crisis/): Healthcare leaders are increasingly recognizing the responsibility of the industry to respond to this crisis. - [Women@Mazzetti Spotlight: Amber McClintock](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/womenmazzetti-spotlight-amber-mcclintock/): Our Women@Mazzetti numbers remain steady as we head into fall! Last week, the W@M and DEIJ committees collaborated to bring in Ellie Krug for “Gray Area Thinking” training, helping us connect and familiarize more as humans! Ellie, a transgender woman, accomplished lawyer, and public speaker from Minneapolis, illustrated how people have a tendency to group and label other people who are considered different or “other”. After establishing the many different ways that we categorize other people, we focused on the specific ways that we also group and label ourselves (and how we can be our own worst critics!). By the end of the presentation, we were enlightened by Ellie’s toolset for “Gray Area Thinking”, including being aware of human vulnerability and showing more compassion for ourselves and others. Through several interactive scenarios, Ellie demonstrated to our group how mentorship, sponsorship, and support are pivotal to creating an inclusive workplace. We are so grateful to Ellie for joining us and sharing her impactful presentation. We look forward to hosting similar events in the future to continue promoting diversity and inclusion within Mazzetti! - [Walt Vernon honored at Healthcare Design’s HCD 10 Awards](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/walt-vernon-honored-at-healthcare-designs-hcd-10-awards/): On this 10th anniversary of Healthcare Design’s HCD 10 Awards, we’re honored for Walt Vernon, Mazzetti CEO, to be listed among these industry standouts in the ‘Building Professional’ category. As an Electrical Engineer, Walt demonstrates his relentless drive to design “healthier, enduring” healthcare environments; however his focus transcends the building. He recognizes the need for more as it pertains to the greatest threat to human health… - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Jasmine Thomas & Sierra Loiselle](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-jasmine-thomas-sierra-loiselle/): With new hires starting this summer, we have a slight uptick in the Women@Mazzetti numbers. We have finally surpassed 40% of our colleagues are women and aim to keep this number rising! At the end of July, the Women@Mazzetti committee and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) committee hosted a company-wide discussion exploring how to more equitably allocate staff to project teams and, specifically, project interviews. The conversations were fruitful; we received feedback that can turn into immediate changes and future goals. Overall, there was an emphasis on involving the entire project team in the interview process, with an emphasis on training and exposure for younger staff. With the successful teamwork between the W@M and DEIJ committees, we look forward to having more joint meetings and hosting diversity events together. - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Nikki Tuft](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-nikki-tuft/): Summer is here—temperatures are rising, but our W@M numbers are holding steady for the month (per graph above). - [Is the Traditional NICU Delivering the Best Outcomes for All Preemies?](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/is-the-traditional-nicu-delivering-the-best-outcomes-for-all-preemies/): Approximately 11% of babies worldwide are born premature. Most babies born at 32 weeks of pregnancy have only a few temporary health issues that require a stay in the NICU for  a few days to a few weeks. At 32 weeks, babies still have a couple months to go before reaching their full birth weight, but they’re well developed. However, most babies who are born very preterm and extremely preterm have extremely low birth weight and a higher risk of complications and health problems than a baby born at 32 weeks. Babies born at 26-28 weeks have an increased risk for medical complications and disabilities such as cerebral palsy, deafness, blindness, and neurological problems and may face an extended stay in the NICU. Babies born at 26-28 weeks gestation have the following characteristics that require additional specialized care and environmental considerations: - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Anjali Wale](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-anjali-wale/): Due to some revisions to the company board and the qualifications for technical positions, June’s Women@Mazzetti numbers are showing an uptick in our number of women on the Board of Directors and in leadership and technical positions. In June, the W@M committee hosted a cross-office ‘speed dating” event to encourage people from different offices who don’t have the opportunity to work together to get to know one another better. With a robust group from across all our Mazzetti offices, we split into small break-out rooms to chat and learn about each other before switching to a new room and starting over. A list of questions was provided to help break the ice with fun topics such as where your first vacation will be after the pandemic, how many languages you can speak, and what some of your favorite work projects have been. The goal of this meet and greet event was not only to promote more interaction between our offices but also to spur new connections that could be beneficial for employee mentorship and professional development. We look forward to hosting more fun events like this in the future! - [Pride: Colorful reflections and “gray” projections](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/pride-colorful-reflections-and-gray-projections/): As the official LGBTQ+ Pride Month comes to a close, we’re reflecting on what ‘Pride’ means to us. Where are we today in our thinking/perspectives? What can we learn from each other? How can we expand and evolve to be better stewards of DEI values?  - [Lean Leadership: How Five Minutes a Day Creates More Effective Teams](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/lean-leadership-how-five-minutes-a-day-creates-more-effective-teams/): Typically, when we talk about Lean methodologies, most conversations hover around project design and delivery—providing more value with fewer resources (eliminating waste). How does this apply to leadership? What does it mean to be a lean leader? (Google, of course, could provide several answers.) During an interview with Derek West, highlighting his recent leadership promotion in Mazzetti Sacramento, he mentioned something he had started doing with his team—daily, he offers informal 5-minute check-ins with each of his team members, particularly geared toward younger staff. The intent, in a “shotgun approach”, as Derek refers, is to increase productivity by quickly removing a barrier (i.e. answer a critical question). This five-minute allotment can justifiably evolve into 30 minutes if a learning and development opportunity is achieved. At the end of the conversation, the co-worker is that much more informed, confident, and able to tackle a similar obstacle in the future. AND, the lean aspect, the need for Derek (or others) to coach/advise on that topic in the future is mitigated or completed alleviated. - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Lisa Sombart](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-lisa-sombart/): We are excited to have more women join the Mazzetti family and cannot wait to highlight them in future spotlights. - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Bethany Beers](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-bethany-beers/): Per the graph above, Women@Mazzetti numbers have been holding steady this past month. - [Meet Bryen Sackenheim: Mazzetti’s New Director of Business Development | Technology Division](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/meet-bryen-sackenheim-mazzettis-new-director-of-business-development-technology-division/): Meet Bryen Sackenheim, Mazzetti’s new Director of Business Development for our Technology Division which includes Medical Equipment Planning, IT/LV/Specialty Systems, and Transition Planning services. Bryen is highly experienced leading multi-disciplinary teams and identifying new business opportunities. Bryen joins Mazzetti as a Principal, under our *Mazzetti+GBA Technology Division, based in Nashville, TN. - [Hot Water for Handwashing: Is it necessary?](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/hot-water-for-handwashing-is-it-necessary/): Over the last several years, experts in infection control have been uprooting old assumptions that hot water is an essential component in handwashing. The World Health Organization (WHO) says, “Apart from the issue of skin tolerance and level of comfort, water temperature does not appear to be a critical factor for microbial removal from hands being washed.” Water in the temperature range we can tolerate is not hot enough to kill bacteria — it would have to be scalding hot before its temperature could improve upon the simple act of scrubbing with soap. - [Women @ Mazzetti Spotlight: Brianne Copes](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/women-mazzetti-spotlight-brianne-copes/): As we settle into 2021 (how is it March already?!), our Women@Mazzetti numbers are holding steady! The W@M committee’s goals for this year are to work on developing and revamping the mentorship programs within the company as well as to focus on allyship and scenario-based training. We are collaborating with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Justice committee (DEIJ) to ensure that all our efforts are benefitting everyone at Mazzetti (and beyond) in positive and impactful ways. By restructuring the internal mentorship program at Mazzetti, we hope to increase accessibility and connectivity across the company, regardless of location (i.e. One Mazzetti) And, we are continuing our monthly spotlights on the incredible women of Mazzetti. This month, we are excited to highlight Brianne Copes! - [Responding to a “Hot” Hospital’s Need to Increase COVID Care Capacity](https://www.mazzetti.com/article/responding-to-a-hot-hospitals-need-to-increase-covid-care-capacity/): 50 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, CA, is the city of Riverside, home to over 300,000 people (the most populous city in Riverside County). Designed to accommodate future passenger growth and evolving operational demands, the project enhances connectivity throughout the terminal and enables baggage checked at any ticket counter to be efficiently routed to any gate. - [Alaska Airlines Lounge North Satellite, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/alaska-airlines-lounge-north-satellite-seattle-tacoma-international-airport-sea/) - [UC Davis Health CUP Expansion ](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/uc-davis-health-cup-expansion-2/) - [City of Eugene Riverfront Plaza](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/city-of-eugene-riverfront-plaza/) - [Memorial Sloan Kettering – The Hospital Pavilion](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/memorial-sloan-kettering-the-hospital-pavilion/) - [Mayo Clinic East Expansion](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/mayo-clinic-east-expansion/) - [Long-Duration Energy Storage for Healthcare](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/long-duration-energy-storage-for-healthcare/): The grid that hospitals depend on is changing faster than the codes, budgets, and backup systems built around it. Wildfires, severe weather, cyber threats, aging infrastructure, and surging electrical demand are turning “reliable power” from an assumption into a strategic risk. At the same time, healthcare remains one of the most carbon-intensive building sectors in the country — under real pressure to decarbonize without ever compromising patient safety. - [Electrical Plug Loads](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/electrical-plug-loads/): Significant advancements emerged from this research effort, including the completion and public discussion of a large, multi-hospital empirical plug-load study focused on healthcare receptacle circuits. The work also led to the publication of a peer-reviewed journal article introducing a new probabilistic methodology for sizing plug loads, providing a more data-driven alternative to traditional design assumptions. Most notably, the findings directly informed revisions to demand factors in the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC) for healthcare facilities. Together, these achievements represent more than industry commentary or advocacy; they introduced new data, new analytical methods, and measurable code-level impact. - [ASHRAE Research: Medical Imaging Equipment Energy Use](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/ashrae-research-medical-imaging-equipment-energy-use/): Until RP-1816 is formally published by ASHRAE: - [ASHRAE Research: Ventilation, Health & Climate Impact](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/ashrae-research-ventilation-health-climate-impact/): Ventilation decisions carry significant implications for both human health and climate impact, particularly in healthcare, laboratory, and other high performance environments. Over ventilation can unintentionally increase energy use and emissions, while under ventilation can compromise indoor environmental quality. This research supports evidence based decision making that protects occupants while advancing Mazzetti’s environmental mission of bending the climate curve. - [ASHRAE Research: Gray Water Reuse & Water Resilience](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/ashrae-research-gray-water-reuse-water-resilience/): As climate change and population growth intensify pressure on water resources, buildings must play an active role in water conservation and resilience. Gray water reuse offers meaningful reductions in potable water demand, yet adoption is often hindered by design complexity, regulatory uncertainty, and operational risk. Advancing reliable reuse strategies supports both environmental stewardship and community resilience, key pillars of Mazzetti’s public benefit commitments. - [UC Health Scope 1 Decarbonization](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/uc-health-scope-1-decarbonization/) - [Legacy Health Decarbonization Master Plan](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/legacy-health-decarbonization-master-plan/) - [Banner Health Primary Data Center](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/banner-health-primary-data-center/): Mazzetti designed a new, Tier III, two-story data center facility with data processing “rooms” on the second floor and electrical distribution equipment on the first floor. Data center Tiers are from the Uptime institute that categorizes data centers into four levels of reliability and redundancy, even potential periods of routine maintenance. The first three rooms were built with the expansion possibility into two more shelled rooms; the electrical infrastructure was designed to be duplicated to support future possibilities. The new central plant was developed to support both the data center and a 300,000sf administrative office. The design included variable speed drives on all the chillers, cooling towers, and both chilled and condenser water pumps. The piping configuration was designed to meet Tier III requirements consisting of a looped design that allows for continuous operations while isolating portions of the distribution. A thermal ride-thru tank was provided to ensure cooling during the transition of normal and emergency power. The office tower piping was isolated from the main data center cooling system by an intermediate heat exchanger. These configurations help provide an efficient data center with future possibilities of engineering additional data centers in the open pod areas. - [Hyperscale Lab and Data Center](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/hyperscale-lab-data-center/) - [Tier III Data Center](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/tier-3-data-center/) - [University of Oregon Hayward Field](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/university-of-oregon-hayward-field/) - [VA El Paso Medical Center](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/va-el-paso-medical-center/) - [Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital IISc Medical School](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/bagchi-parthasarathy-hospital-iisc-medical-school/) - [Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center — Microgrid](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/kaiser-permanente-richmond-medical-center-microgrid/) - [UCI Health — Irvine Medical Campus](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/uci-health-irvine-medical-campus/) - [University of Oregon: Klamath Hall Synthetic Chemistry and Guillemin Laboratory Renovations ](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/university-of-oregon-klamath-hall-synthetic-chemistry-and-guillemin-laboratory-renovations/) - [Klickitat Valley Health ](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/klicktat-valley-health/) - [UW Medicine Center for Behavioral Health and Learning](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/uw-medicine-center-for-behavioral-health-and-learning/) - [RIDC Mill 19](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/ridc-mill-19/) - [Valley Children’s Healthcare Main Campus Energy Strategy and Microgrid](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/valley-childrens-healthcare-main-campus-energy-strategy-and-microgrid/) - [VA Loma Linda Outpatient Clinic](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/va-loma-linda-outpatient-clinic/) - [University of Global Health Equity Campus](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/university-of-global-health-equity-campus/) - [Small Hospital Big Idea Competition](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/small-hospitals-big-ideas/) - [Oregon Health & Science University Decarbonization Plan](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/oregon-health-science-university-decarbonization-plan/) - [Legacy Holladay Park Central Lab Relocation](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/legacy-holladay-park-central-lab-relocation/) - [John Muir Medical Center Walnut Creek](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/john-muir-medical-center/) - [UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital and Central Utility Plant](https://www.mazzetti.com/project/ucsf-health-helen-diller-hospital-central-utility-plant/): Mazzetti is providing MEP engineering, energy modeling, lighting design, and sustainability consulting services as part of an integrated project delivery team. Avoiding the abundance of aircraft exhaust required various elaborate tests (typically from 12am – 4am, during non-peak travel time), simulating gate doors opening and closing, while measuring the responding indoor air pressure. We borrowed the local fire department’s smoke generator to create physical smoke, observing the pattern of the air flow. We developed a control scheme for the HVAC system to react dynamically, in real time, to door openings. Essentially we identified how to maintain air flow in one direction, protecting the indoor air quality.
