M+NLB Announces Retirement of Principal, Hugh O. Nash Jr.

Feb 22, 2011

Engineering consulting firm Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch has announced that after over 40 years of dedication and significant contributions to the industry, Hugh O. Nash Jr. is ending his tenure as Principal, but will remain as a consultant to the firm.

Nash began his career with his own electrical contracting business and later joined and became a Principal of Nashville based Smith-Seckman Reid (SSR).  After over 20 years at SSR, Nash, along with fellow partners E. Spivey Lipsey Jr. and Steve Burch, formed Nash Lipsey Burch, LLC (NLB) in 1997. Within two years NLB had projects in over 20 states.

Hugh received a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University. A distinguished leader, Nash is a Fellow with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); Fellow of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers (FASHE); has been chairman of the IEEE White Book; served on the National Electrical Code Committee; chaired the NFPA 99 Electrical Systems Committee; is a member of the AIA Committee for the Revision of Guidelines for Construction and Equipment of Hospitals and Medical Facilities; and served on the Board of Directors for the Facilities Guidelines Institute.

“Hugh hired me out of Vanderbilt 25 years ago. He has been a mentor to me, and has taught me a lot about engineering, and about working with people,” said Walt Vernon, President of M+NLB. “Completely aside from the fact that he is an icon in the industry, I will miss his insight, his unfailing willingness to provide his thinking, and his friendship.”

An accomplished author, Nash has written over 50 articles and publications on a number of topics, including hospital electrical design, emergency and standby power systems and quality management. Two of his most notable works are the AHA/ASHE Electrical Systems in Health Care Facilities and theHandbook on Electrical Systems. While Nash was chairing the IEEE Working Group, the group produced the first three editions of the IEEE White Book, which covers the recommended practice for operation and design of health care electrical systems.

In 2006, Nash wrote and published Patriot Sons, Patriot Brothers a historical biography about two brothers during the American Revolution and the untold story of the naming of Nashville.

During his long career, Nash has designed systems for numerous healthcare facilities in 35 states, including Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, LA; Veterans Administration Hospital in Nashville and Alvin C. York VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN; and Wake Forest University, Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

"Hugh’s contributions to M+NLB and the industry during his 40 years have been invaluable," said Steve Burch, managing Principal of the Nashville office.  "We have greatly benefited from the integrity he brought to the industry and his work. In particular, he skillfully oversaw the completion of complex projects and having the best interest of our clients.  We will miss the keen insight, and good humor that he brought to his work.”
