The Dalles Middle School exemplifies the energy conservation that can be achieved with high-performance design. Design innovations, such as natural day lighting, wind-driven ventilation, and a ground-source heat pump to heat and cool the building are anticipated to reduce annual energy consumption by 45% to 50% for the building. Located on the same site as the existing 600-student school, the 96,765sf replacement facility is the first school in Oregon to be built under the federal LEED system for rating buildings.
