Mazzetti Nash Lipsey Burch (M+NLB) provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for this new four-story laboratory, including five Biosafety Level 3 laboratories and a vivarium. All laboratory spaces utilize variable air volume control on the supply and exhaust systems to maintain control of the room pressurization. The plumbing systems include three separate waste systems for normal, acid, and BSL-3 drainage, as well as domestic and laboratory process water, compressed air and vacuum systems, and a deionized water loop. The electrical system includes an emergency generator to maintain power to the HVAC systems, so as to prevent a loss of pressurization in the laboratories and to maintain a safe environment.
Members of the project team coordinated closely to provide quality design with an emphasis on safety, functionality, and cost. M+NLB worked with the selected subcontractors during the design process to anticipate and resolve field construction details. The design needed to allow for future laboratory spaces and changes due to advancements in technology and science. The resulting design met the University’s needs and long-term goals.
