Water Conservation
When implementing water conservation efforts, we analyze existing systems to determine areas to reduce water consumption and wastewater generation. From there, we formulate and incorporate conservation measures, including equipment and plumbing upgrades, stormwater reclamation, graywater systems, and outreach programs.
What is involved?
Operations Analysis – BLUE analyzes existing building systems and operations to determine opportunities to reduce water consumption and wastewater generation, often through water metering services and by mapping a facility’s various water uses. BLUE then determines which water conservation strategies will be most effective in both implementation and cost.
Implementation – Once appropriate water conservation strategies are established, BLUE designs and implements the established strategies. Designs range from simple equipment upgrades, such as improvements to plumbing fixtures, as well as both mechanical and medical equipment, to the design of entire systems, including storm water reclamation and gray water systems.
Education – Society has adopted the dangerous notion that an unlimited supply of potable water exists, making it difficult to change society’s ubiquitous habits regarding water value and its consumption. These antiquated views must be addressed so as to most effectively achieve a facility’s water reduction goals. One of the biggest challenges facilities face in implementing water reduction strategies is educating an organization’s employees to be aware of the importance of water conservation. Acclimating employees to sustainable practices as early as possible aids not only in the implementation and acceptance of these systems, but also in the reduction of daily water consumption. Collaboration, best management practices, and information sharing with other healthcare facilities continues to be an integral in the evolution of water conservation strategies.
