Reduction Analysis in the Built Environment

Performing a reduction analysis is meant to help clients establish reduction and certification goals, identify energy-conservation measures, determine associated costs, and predict energy consumption. We provide a comparative matrix to identify a combination of energy reduction techniques that best fit the client’s needs.

What is involved?

Goal Setting – In order to design a successful building system, specific criteria must be established in order to evaluate and compare different system variations. BLUE will work with the organization to develop priorities that best fit the client’s needs, help identify and adopt a particular methodology, and establish clear certification goals. Building certifications may include LEED, Architecture 2030, or benchmarking, as in the case of Energy Star’s TargetFinder.

Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) – Once goals are established and prioritized, BLUE will compile a list of potential energy reduction techniques. These may be standalone solutions, implementing a displacement ventilation air system for instance, or a combination of strategies, such as installing low-E performance glass, alongside high-efficiency air handlers and absorption chillers.

Energy Modeling – After generating potential ECMs, BLUE will analyze all scenarios using whole building simulation software so as to provide meaningful feedback, determine any associated costs, and predict energy consumption. A matrix is generated to highlight each of the ECMs relative to a “baseline” building. BLUE uses the matrix to compare different ECMs based on the priorities established.

Design Selection – Based on the comparative matrix produced, BLUE will help select a combination of energy reduction techniques that best fit the established needs. By following the prescriptive requirements necessary to meet certification and benchmarking objectives, a fully compliant energy simulation will be created to aid in achieving goals.
